A week in review

We just got back last night from a 9 day stay in Texas which explains my blogging hiatus. It was quite a busy week filled with baby showers, bachelorette parties, and reunions with family and old friends. No wonder we're exhausted! I've decided that we will no longer travel with the kiddo until he's at least 3. It will take me that long to recuperate, I promise.

Julie's baby shower was a smashing success and she is such a gorgeous mommy-to-be. I can't wait to meet her baby girl! Later in the week we ventured out to meet Tara and her baby, Luke, who might just beat Jacob's off-the-charts growth curve. I then headed to Austin for Melody's bachelorette party which just too much fun. Jacob had an awesome time playing with his cousins and I was so happy to be able to see my Grandma who was visiting as well. We miss being so close to everyone!

Here are some pics of our week together:

It's Texas hot people

I used to think that I loved the heat, but this week is proving me wrong. It has been hot, hot, hot here. Texas hot. HOUSTON hot. I found this advisory on weather.com:

"A HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM PDT THIS EVENING. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ALSO ISSUED AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 12 PM TO 8 PM PDT THURSDAY."

This cracks me up mostly because if an excessive heat warning were issued in Houston every time it reached 90 degrees, Houstonians would spend 6 months out of the year in an "excessive heat" status.

Here's my whole take on the situation. Air conditioning does not exist in 90% of the homes in the Bay Area. You don't need it. Really. I thought this was crazy when I moved here years ago but then I realized that the majority of the time, it is completely unnecessary. Well, that is, of course, until you have a week like this one and you are sweating in your sleep (ick.) So, the national weather service has to issue excessive heat warnings like this because we're all sitting in our 90 degree houses with no protection!

Even still, my new mom friends and I venture out to the park and watch our little ones run around with bright, rosy cheeks and sweaty heads. The sunscreen and water overflows. We met at one of our favorite parks today, and I just had to post a couple of pictures. Jacob in his little golf shirt and sandals and our friend Ellie in her adorable hat and sunglasses (I can't keep a hat or sunglasses on Jacob to save my life.) It was unbearably hot but still super fun!

What does the puppy dog say?

To say that Jacob loves dogs is an understatement. Whenever he sees one he gets SO excited. It's no wonder that he started "barking" before saying any actual words.

It's a good thing he won't remember it

Uncle Eric and Shannon came to visit us this past weekend and we had a blast. Mark and Eric decided to go hang gliding on Saturday. Unfortunately, we made a poor decision and took Jacob with us despite the fact that he does not do well on long car rides. To make things worse, the drive included endless windy roads up a mountain which was torture on Jacob's ears.

The site where they were jumping from was just a plain patch of grass on the top of Mount Tam. The view was amazing! Jacob ran around for a little bit while Mark got outfitted in all the hang gliding gear. The poor kid couldn't even have imagined what happened next. Daddy said goodbye to his little man and then ran right off the edge of the mountain. I didn't even think that this would disturb Jacob (DUH) but he screamed and screamed as Mark flew further and further away. What in the world was I thinking?? How traumatizing is that?

We did meet back up with him at the bottom of the mountain about 30 minutes later and Jacob had forgotten the whole thing. Thank goodness for baby memories.

We spent Sunday in Napa enjoying lots of wine and good company. :)

Peek a Boo!!

Jacob's new favorite game is "hiding" behind our very sheer curtain. It's hilarious. He totally thinks we don't see him and then he runs out to surprise us and then starts laughing hysterically. And it cracks us up every time.

Another first

I seem to have misread Jacob's need for a nap yesterday. He's been teasing me lately with 1 long nap a day, so when he crashed in his highchair at 9:15 in the morning, I was shocked (and rather amused, so of course I had to get a picture.)

Our poor little man has had a rough week. He had 3 shots on Wednesday, the doctor confirmed that his eye teeth and back molars are coming in, he took a bad fall on Thursday and bonked his head, and he can't seem to shake this cold he's had for over a month. So, I don't blame him for passing out so early. :(

Thank goodness for family

Our home is finally starting to feel like a home thanks largely to nanny and papa's visit this past weekend. Talk about workhorses...they didn't quit until all of our "to do's" were done! That included digging up the backyard and laying down pipe, clearing out the million boxes and bags of paper in our garage and hauling them to the recycling center, painting, cleaning, installing, you name it. I'm amazed by (and so thankful for) all of their help. Thanks again nanny and papa!
